The Tralee to Fenit Greenway

Plan Your Visit

Opening Date for the Tralee to Fenit Greenway

All of us in Tralee have been watching and waiting patiently (sort of) for the opening of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway and, finally, the day seems to be within sight! Rumblings around the town seem to indicate that the Greenway will open in early 2022 – late March or early April to be precise.

What is the Greenway route?

The start of the Greenway is already open in Tralee, since 2013. The section of pristine tarmacked path is affectionately known as the “Skinny Mile” locally!

The route starts opposite Tralee’s Casement Train Station in the heart of Tralee town. It runs from Casement Station all the way to Fenit Pier. The Route actually follows the disused rail line from Tralee to Fenit Harbour.

The track formed part of the Tralee – Limerick Railway Line which ran through North Kerry and was closed in 1978 and was officially abandoned in 1987. The total length of the route will be 14km each way.

What is along the Greenway?

The route of the Greenway travel from Tralee town centre, north-westerly, to Mounthawk on the edge of town. From here the route turns west, running parallel with the R558 to Fenit. Along the way it passes through the village of the Spa and townland of Kilfenora to arrive at the your destination on the pier.

In the Spa, should you wish to stop, you could call the the Oyster Tavern for a refreshing drink or Spa Seafoods for a wonderful Fish and Chips Takeaway.

If you continued past the Spa and would prefer to stop a little further along the route, you could drop off at Kilfenora and have a lovely drink, or bite to eat in the Tankard Bar and Restaurant.

What is there to do in Fenit?

In Fenit you can spend the time exploring the pier or admiring the boats docked nearby. There is a lovely walkway along the beach, looking out at Wild Atlantic Way with Fenit Lighthouse in the distance which takes you to the site of the old diving boards…..if you fancy a dip. There is plans in place reinstate the diving boards so hopefully they will be back before the Greenway opens.

You can also visit the beehive huts, at the end of the pier on your way to visit the monument to Brendan the Navigator, which overlooks the entire end of the pier.

Is there somewhere to eat?

If you fancy some lunch, or something to drink while in Fenit you have some wonderful options. For a light bite you can call to Navo Café and Pizzeria. For a full dinner and alcoholic refreshment you can call to West End Bar. For a takeaway fish and chips the Village Chipper is your best option.

How can I explore the Greenway?

By Bike, of course!! 🙂 We have a fleet of hybrid bikes – male, female and child options – available to rent at the moment and we hope to have added Ebikes to our fleet by the time the Greenway opens. We also offer complimentary child seats and trailers with every adult rental (subject to availability).

You can of course walk the greenway also, but we DEFINITELY recommend hopping on a bike.
